The exhibition is the first comprehensive retrospective organized in an Italian museum and celebrates the French-American artist known for her large and colorful Nanas, but also revealing her engaged side through a different reading of her work.
Structured in eight sections, the exhibition recounts Niki’s artistic life, from her beginnings to her last works, in a diachronic but also strongly anthological rhythm that traces, through the colorful, polymorphic, rounded and maternal world of her Nanas (and beyond), a much less joyful personal life. Over the years, the artist has often had to destroy in order to process grief and then rebuild, breaking the mold through intense provocations, to ultimately leave a lasting imprint on the art world.
Produced in collaboration with the Niki Charitable Art Foundation, the exhibition showcases 110 works, including a dozen large-scale ones and one set up in the Museum’s outdoor courtyard, as well as an elegant selection of Maison Dior dresses, which also recall her modeling past in the beautiful photographic shots of her and simultaneously tell the public about a very “pop” personal vision of art, understood as a path toward the affirmation of the feminine.
Niki de Saint Phalle, ‘woman and artist’ (as she liked to call herself), painter, sculptor, experimental filmmaker, performer, eludes unambiguous definition. Her monumental works, including parks and public sculptures, are intertwined with more personal and sometimes poignant reflection. On the one hand, she is seen as an independent celebrity who is proud of her art; on the other, her physical frailty and the many social inequalities and discriminations she has witnessed throughout her life bring out her humanity and sensitivity to the fragile.
Lived in a time of great social and artistic change-from the feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s to the Nouveau réalisme of which she was a protagonist-Niki de Saint Phalle (Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1930, La Jolla, 2002) was one of the artists who most challenged gender stereotypes through art, expressing her identity through femininity, sensuality andlove of life as creation.
