The exhibition, produced by 24 ORE Cultura – Gruppo 24 ORE, promoted by the City of Milan Culture with the patronage of the Consulate General of Switzerland in Milan and featuring Fondazione Deloitte as Institutional Partner, recounts the extraordinary expressive power of Art Brut, an artistic and revolutionary vision from which many contemporary artists have drawn inspiration and which continues to be vital today, in the belief that art is for anyone with a voice to resonate through the expression of unexpected beauty.
Born in the heart of a postwar Paris, far from the halls of art museums and refined salons, Art Brut, whose definition and theorization belongs to French artist and theorist Jean Dubuffet, represents ‘raw,’ ‘pure,’ ‘unfiltered’ art.
Through a four-part itinerary, the exhibition presents in a first space a body of works and documents that place the invention of the concept of Art Brut in a historical perspective, relative to Jean Dubuffet’s work as an artist, writer and collector. Next, a selection of works from his explorations attests to the breadth and quality of his research in this field upstream of the 1971 donation. A third set of from the five continents is related to the themes of the body and beliefs, both recurrent in Art Brut. Because of their subjects and origins, these works and authors thus particularly resonate with the Museum’s collections.
Specially conceived for the Museum of Cultures, the exhibition is made possible through a collaboration with the Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne, which owns an extraordinary collection of more than 70,000 works that grew out of the nucleus of Dubuffet’s exceptional donation to the City of Lausanne in 1971. Drawings, paintings, sculptures and textile works, which are still growing today thanks to purchases and donations from new authors.
