Telling timeless stories while succeeding in enchanting the audience is considered a true art, but behind the typical immediacy of the perfect artistic result lies-as is often the case in the art world-a years-long creative research work, generally unknown to those who hear these stories.
After the success of previous stops at Mudec in Milan, Palazzo Barberini in Rome and Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, from October 2, 2024 to February 23, 2025 at the Centro Culturale Altinate San Gaetano in Padua comes“Disney. The Timeless Art of Storytelling,” the exhibition that tells the public about this extraordinary creative process.
Promoted by the City of Padua – Department of Culture and the Centro Culturale Altinate San Gaetano, produced by 24 ORE Cultura-Gruppo 24 ORE and curated by the Walt Disney Animation Research Library with the collaboration of Federico Fiecconi, historian and critic of comics and animation cinema, the exhibition tells the story of Walt Disney, a pioneer in the art of animation, and his most famous characters to adults and children alike.
His innovative creative approach to storytelling created some of the most beautiful and famous films of the 20th Century, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Fantasia. The exhibition features valuable original works from the Disney Archives of these immortal feature films and other celebrated Walt Disney Animation Studios films, including Hercules to The Little Mermaid, all the way to the most recent animated film Frozen 2 – The Secret of Arendelle, created by a new generation of artists and filmmakers still deeply inspired by Walt Disney’s legacy.
The exhibition is a unique opportunity to be able to “enter” the Disney Archives – the highly confidential Animation Research Library not open to the public – and immerse oneself in the stories through original works such as creative research boards, preparatory sketches, animation drawings, layouts and backdrops from the 1930s to the present day made by historic signatures, including, for example: Les Clark, one of Disney’s longest-serving animators who worked on famous characters such as Mickey Mouse and Cinderella; Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas – the legendary “Frank and Ollie” – among the key animators for Pinocchio; Ward Kimball who brought Pinocchio’s Jiminy Cricket to life; Marc Davis known for his work on female characters such as Aurora and Maleficent in “Sleeping Beauty,” and many others.
The exhibition itinerary is enriched with a special interactive path designed for the youngest – ages 4 to 10 – with numerous fun educational activities: from the images of the Talking Cricket, who through a few questions will invite children to look inside a small peephole, to magnetic puzzles with which to reconstruct characters and rearrange the sequence of scenes from Disney masterpieces, to a place completely dedicated to them to draw their most beloved characters and take a souvenir of their adventure with them. Along the exhibition halls, moreover, adults and children can take a souvenir photo with the most iconic protagonists of Disney Animation stories, or even feel like princes and princesses for a day by sitting on the throne of the enchanted castle as in Sleeping Beauty in the Woods.
