Catalog on the occasion of the exhibition “Giuliano Vangi. Colloquy with the ancient. Pisano, Donatello, Michelangelo “
MART in Rovereto from July 1 to October 9, 2022
On the occasion of the 90th birthday of Giuliano Vangi, one of Italy’s leading contemporary artists, who is also well known abroad and particularly beloved in the East, the Mart in Rovereto is dedicating a major retrospective exhibition to the great sculptor: Giuliano Vangi. Colloquy with the ancient. Pisano, Donatello, Michelangelo focused on the master’s relationship with great medieval and Renaissance art.
The exhibition catalog, in Italian and English, presents some sixty works, including some of the artist’s major masterpieces such as Ares, Man and Goat, Once Upon a Time, Veio, and Woman Standing with Wide Dress, which show Vangi’s versatility, capable of working with different materials-bronze, marble, glass, wood, ivory-often with additions of contemporary elements (metals, plastics, resins) that contribute to those unmistakable effects of anti-classical dissonance and contemporary expressiveness, constitutive of his stylistic signature.
Numerous drawings open intriguing glimpses into his creative workshop and, often, are presented as accomplished and autonomous graphic-pictorial works in their own right, while the final section houses a number of works by old masters (Tino di Camaino, Donatello, Giovanni Pisano, Michelangelo) to whom Vangi paid special attention.
The book is embellished by an eighth window with the tireless author’s last great undertaking: the sketch of a large 36-meter drawing, which will be exhibited for the first time at Mart; it is also enriched with important essays by Vittorio Sgarbi, Massimo Bertozzi and Daniela Ferrari.
